The Master’s Program in Property Management and Valuation (MMPP), School of Postgraduate Studies, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), together with the MMPP Student Association, hosted a welcoming event for students and lecturers from the Master of Science in Real Estate Department, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The event, held at the MMPP Auditorium, was attended by lecturers, alumni, and MMPP students. This activity served as an important momentum for MMPP USU to strengthen academic collaboration while expanding its international network with partner universities abroad.
The series of events began with a warm welcome to the UTM Malaysia delegation, received directly by the program leaders, lecturers, and students of MMPP. This visit was not only a gesture of academic fellowship but also a tangible symbol of MMPP USU’s commitment to building sustainable international collaborations. Following the welcoming ceremony, the program continued with an academic discussion on Property Management & Valuation, featuring distinguished speakers from academia and professional practice.
Prof. Zulkifli Nasution, lecturer at MMPP USU, opened the session with a presentation on Carbon Valuation. He emphasized the importance of carbon valuation as a strategic instrument to support sustainable development. Such valuation is not only relevant in the context of environmental policy but also has direct implications for corporate business strategies committed to climate change mitigation. Meanwhile, Suherwin, ST, M.Si, MAPPI (Cert), lecturer at MMPP and Chair of MAPPI Sumbagut, delivered a presentation on Palm Plantation Valuation. He highlighted both the challenges and opportunities in valuing oil palm plantation assets, one of Indonesia’s leading sectors, while stressing the need for professional approaches to produce accurate and impactful valuations.
The academic discussion was moderated by Taslim, ST, MMPP, lecturer and Chair of the MMPP Alumni Association. With his experience, he successfully fostered an engaging atmosphere, encouraging participants to actively join the Q&A session. Enthusiasm was evident as many students and alumni took the opportunity to exchange views, raise current issues, and explore deeper insights into the development of property valuation and sustainable management.
Through this activity, MMPP USU reaffirmed its role as an academic platform not only focused on delivering formal education but also on creating meaningful discussion spaces that enrich the knowledge and perspectives of the academic community. The event was expected to strengthen academic ties, broaden students’ horizons, and open opportunities for collaborative research and academic programs with UTM Malaysia.
The successful organization of this event further solidified MMPP USU’s position as a visionary and internationally competitive study program. The collaboration with the Master of Science in Real Estate Department, FABU Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, is expected to continue through joint research, international seminars, and curriculum development that is responsive to global needs.
On Wednesday, August 7, 2025, the program continued with the Industry & Socio-Economic Field Visit as part of the Joint Workshop between MMPP USU & the Real Estate Department of UTM on Property Management and Valuation. The field visit, held from morning until afternoon, provided practical exposure for both MMPP USU and UTM participants. The first destination was the Adolina Palm Oil Mill – PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV Persero, where participants gained insights into palm oil production processes and learned about agro-industrial valuation, which plays a crucial role in supporting the national economy. The delegation then visited Polonia CBD, a central business district offering perspectives on urban area management and commercial property development in a metropolitan setting. Toward the evening, participants explored Sinapir Gallery, a local craft center, to learn about the potential of the creative industry and the richness of local culture—assets that hold both economic value and significance in cultural valuation.
Through this activity, MMPP USU reaffirmed its role as an academic platform that not only focuses on formal education but also actively fosters collaborative spaces that enrich knowledge, expand networks, and open opportunities for research partnerships. The successful organization of this joint event with UTM Malaysia is expected to serve as a foundation for sustainable collaborations in the form of joint research, international seminars, and curriculum development that is adaptive to global needs. In doing so, MMPP USU further strengthens its position as a visionary and internationally competitive study program.
