Medan, October 3, 2024 – On Thursday, October 3, 2024, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was held at Hotel Grand Inna under the theme "Concepts and Strategies for the Regeneration of Medan’s Historic Areas with a Community-Oriented Approach." This event was a collaborative effort between Beranda Warisan Sumatera (BWS), the Medan City Department of Education and Culture, and the Medan City Department of Housing, Settlements, Public Works, and Spatial Planning.
The discussion gathered participants and speakers, including Prof. Johannes Widodo from the National University of Singapore (NUS), who shared valuable insights and experiences managing historic areas.
In her opening remarks, the Director of the Postgraduate School of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Prof. Ir. T. Sabrina M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in such a meaningful discussion. She appreciated the presence of all involved parties and emphasized the significance of participants’ contributions in formulating strategies to preserve Medan’s historic districts. "Through this discussion, I hope we can identify concrete steps for the regeneration of these areas while prioritizing the local community's needs," she stated.
Meanwhile, Isnen Fitri, ST., M.Eng., Ph.D., Secretary of the Master’s Program in Regional and Urban Planning and one of the event’s researchers, also expressed gratitude to all attendees. He highlighted that the discussion aimed to build a common consensus on the preservation and development of Lapangan Merdeka, a significant cultural heritage site in Medan. "In this conservation effort, we must tackle various challenges and issues. That’s why discussions like this are crucial to reaching a strategic agreement on the necessary steps," added Isnen.
The FGD provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas, share perspectives, and develop strategies beneficial to the community and preserving Medan’s historic areas.
Hopefully, this initiative will pave the way for successful preservation and development efforts, safeguarding Medan’s cultural heritage for future generations.
