Recent research conducted by a team from the University of North Sumatra (USU) shows that the people of Telagah Village in Langkat Regency have a high level of perception and participation in addressing the impacts of climate change. These findings demonstrate that rural communities are not merely objects of environmental change but also important actors in community-based mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Climate change has long been a pressing global issue, but for rural communities like Telagah, its impacts are no longer abstract. Shifting weather patterns, rising temperatures, and uncertain planting seasons are directly felt by the community. Amid these challenges, this research demonstrates how Telagah residents understand and respond to climate change in their own ways.
The study, “Climate Change Impact Assessment Based on Perception and Participation in Telagah Village,” was published in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science (2024). The research was led by Prof. Rahmawaty from the USU Faculty of Forestry and a team of international collaborators.
This research arose from the need to understand the responses of communities living in forest buffer zones, which have long been at the forefront of climate change. Telagah Village was chosen because of its proximity to a forest area and its community activities being heavily influenced by environmental conditions. To gather data, the research team conducted in-depth interviews, distributed questionnaires, and conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) with eight key informants.
Initial findings indicate that the Telagah community views climate change as a serious problem affecting the economy, agriculture, and daily life. Weather uncertainty, increasingly inconsistent rainfall, and longer dry periods are the most significant phenomena. Interestingly, residents associated these changes with land clearing, reduced forest cover, and unsustainable land use practices.
In this study, the team also assessed the level of community participation in environmental efforts. The results showed that community participation was high. The community is actively involved in conservation activities such as tree planting, forest protection, village cleanup, and informal education about climate change. Some community groups have even begun implementing agricultural techniques that are more adaptive to extreme weather.
According to Prof. Rahmawaty, these findings are important because they demonstrate that rural residents already possess a strong ecological awareness. “Communities are not only aware of the impacts of climate change, but they are also taking concrete steps to adapt and protect their environment,” he said. He emphasized that positive perceptions and high levels of participation are crucial foundations for the success of climate adaptation programs at the local level.
This study also underscores that even with community participation, policy support is still needed. Community-based adaptation programs, empowerment, and capacity building must be strengthened so that mitigation measures can have a broader impact. The research team emphasized the need for synergy between academics, village governments, conservation institutions, and the private sector.
From a socio-economic perspective, this research opens up significant opportunities. If community participation can be integrated with forest management programs and local resource utilization, the Telagah community could become an example of a climate-resilient village. Strong awareness and a willingness to change are the initial capital for building a more comprehensive sustainability system.
This study also confirms Indonesia’s position as a megadiverse country, a crucial player in global climate change discussions. With many villages located near forest areas, the findings from Telagah can be adapted to other regions. These local efforts provide a positive signal that climate adaptation need not always start with national policies but can emerge from grassroots communities.
While the initial findings are very promising, the research team recognizes that many challenges remain. Limited information, minimal support from environmental programs, and suboptimal access to adaptation technology are some of the identified barriers. Nevertheless, the results of this study provide a sufficient starting point for designing more measurable and sustainable climate adaptation strategies.
Amid global concerns about the climate crisis, this research offers some optimism. Village communities often viewed as vulnerable actually possess strong adaptive capacities. The results of the Telagah study demonstrate that environmental awareness, local collaboration, and community commitment can be a real force in addressing climate change.
This article not only highlights scientific findings but also offers a new perspective: that significant solutions to climate change can emerge from small villages, from communities that safeguard their forests and lands with knowledge passed down through generations.
