Head of the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Natural Resources and Environmental Management, USU Postgraduate School, Serves as an Invited Speaker at the International Conference of IBIOSDG 2025. Prof. Rahmawaty Highlights the Importance of Community Participation in Ecotourism Management in the Buffer Zone of Gunung Leuser National Park.

Prof. Ir. Dr. Rahmawaty from the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Natural Resources and Environmental Management, USU Postgraduate School, served as an invited speaker in the plenary session of the IBIOSDG 2025 Conference organized by UiTM in collaboration with Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) in Langkawi, Malaysia, on 27–28 November 2025.

In her presentation titled “The Role of Community Participation in Managing Ecotourism in the Buffer Zone of Gunung Leuser National Park,” Prof. Rahmawaty underscored the critical role of local communities in ecotourism management surrounding the TNGL area. Her research findings indicate that community participation falls under the high category, with involvement ranging from bamboo conservation and land rehabilitation to bamboo-based economic enterprises.

She emphasized that this participatory model supports the achievement of SDGs, particularly Goals 8, 13, and 15. “When communities gain economic benefits from a sustainably managed environment, their commitment to conservation becomes significantly stronger,” she stated.
