Inauguration of Compost Fertilizer House Brings New Hope for Organic Farming in Pantai Labu, Deli Serdang

Pantai Labu, 12 February 2024—Today, a Compost Fertilizer House was inaugurated in Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency, thanks to the collaboration of various parties. This inauguration event is a collaboration between community leaders, educational institutions, and agricultural organizations that aims to strengthen the organic agriculture sector in North Sumatra.

The event was attended by 110 students from USU's Faculty of Agriculture, 13 students and lecturers from UISU, 10 UISU alumni and lecturers, and the Teen Mosque Nature Lovers community. In addition, 30 farmers and housewives from Pantai Labu Village who have the potential to develop organic agriculture were also present.

The event began with an informative speech from Prof. T. Sabrina Djunita, M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., Director of the Graduate School of the Universitas Sumatera Utara and Head of HITI Komda Sumut. She highlighted the important issue of carbon concentration in the atmosphere, which has now reached 400 ppm, and its environmental impact. Prof. Sabrina urged people not to burn waste to reduce carbon contributions by processing waste into compost, which is basically a source of nutrients for the soil.

Furthermore, Ir. H. Soekirman from the Asian Organic Ambassador expressed his concern about North Sumatra's low ranking in the Village Development Index. He emphasized the importance of policies, institutions, and cooperation in promoting organic farming as one of the solutions to improve North Sumatra's ranking in the index.

Mr. Musa Rajekshah, a community leader who plays an important role in this activity, motivated the farmers to continue their passion for farming. He also shared his experiences on his efforts in managing palm oil mill waste and open pond waste and his hope that this Compost House can turn Pantai Labu into a model village for sustainable organic farming.

The organic fertilizer processing workshop by Dr. Ir. Erwin Nyak Akoeb, MP, the head of the North Sumatra Soil and Water Conservation Society, provided a practical understanding of how to produce organic fertilizer from agricultural waste. The process involves shredding agricultural waste and mixing it with decomposing microorganisms to produce quality organic fertilizer.

The inauguration of the Compost House was marked by Mr. Musa Rajekshah and Prof. Ir. T. Sabrina Djunita, M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., putting corn crop waste into the chopping machine, and the symbolic handover of organic fertilizer to representatives of Pantai Labu Village farmers.

The event concluded with a group photo session, lunch, and casual discussion. Hopefully, the existence of this Compost Fertilizer House will be a significant starting point in increasing the productivity of organic agriculture in North Sumatra and inspiring other villages to adopt environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices.
